More than 30,000 students in 128 Catholic schools across the Archdiocese of St. Louis are celebrating national Catholic Schools Week, January 26 - February 1. This year’s theme is “Catholic Schools: Learn. Serve. Lead. Succeed.”
During this week, schools plan their own activities each day to build up their community, celebrate their faith and recognize the lifelong benefits provided by a Catholic education. Many of our schools will host open houses so you can see the benefits firsthand.
Nearly 1.8 million children are enrolled in 6,300 Catholic schools across the United States. Catholic Schools Week began in 1974 and is a joint project of the National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA) and the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB).
As shared in our archdiocesan newspaper, The St. Louis Review, “Thomas Burnford, head of NCEA, says Catholic schools are an “essential, integral” part of Catholic ministry as they present the reality of God and the Gospel through curriculum.”
Mary Pat Donoghue, executive director of the Secretariat of Catholic Education at the USCCB, points out in another article that because students experience religious doctrine throughout their entire curriculum, they are provided a great foundation for building a relationship with Jesus Christ.
“What we seek to do is bring forward the Church’s intellectual tradition and form their minds in all of the content and areas that they study. This is an excellent tool of evangelization because it exposes kids not just to Catholic practices, regarding prayer and liturgy, but also to a Catholic understanding of reality.”
